    Description

    1856 orders signed by Samuel Mercer (1799-1862), a career US Navy officer who commanded US Powhatan in Charlestn Harbor at the outset of the war and led the squadron that failed to relieve Fort Sumter; he briefly commanded the northern blockade squadron before retirement du eto age.  Document orders George Emerson to transfer from Savannah to Bainbridge; signed by Mercer as the commander of the Brazil Station.  Interesting item worth further research.
