    Description

1863 Union Military Tax Receipt Civil War L.C. Dowell Missouri Daviess County. Measurements are roughly 7 x 2” .
My teeth almost fell out when I unfolded this little piece of paper and read what it said .
I had never heard about this tax before and so I did a little research. The only thing I can find is that the Union , made into law by then President Abraham Lincoln, made a tax on citizens specifically to fund the Civil War .
I’m guessing that this is what the paper reflects.
If anyone knows any different I would love for you to tell me please.
I, being a Southerner , also had to know if the Confederacy taxed it’s citizens as well , and they did … I guess somebody had to pay for the war!
This paper was found in a Texas barn clean out. Most of the papers are from Missouri. They are in amazing condition for as old as they are!
Please see my other listings for more antique papers, check back often as I have much to list. I packed very well with cardboard and plastic and ship fast!
Thanks for taking a look and please let me know if you have any questions.
