Description

Original Civil War discharge document of Samuel Kiplinger, a Private in Co. A, 48th Indiana Infantry. Dated at Savannah, Ga., Jan. 15, 1865, shortly after the Regiment completed Sherman's March to the Sea. Signed by Geo. W. Hill, Capt. 13th Infantry, A.C.M., 3d Div., 15th A.C."

The soldier, Samuel Kiplinger, is described as having enrolled on Nov. 16, 1861, to serve three years, and is discharged  "by reason of Expiration of service", and is described as being 23 years of age, 6 feet tall, of dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, and a farmer when enrolled in the service.
On the back is a statement signed by Kiplinger's Captain, John W. Leitch, (of Elkhart, Indiana, mustered in as a Private on Dec. 6, 1861 into Co. A, 48th Ind., and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel by the end of the war), providing a list of the Battles Kiplinger fought in. It reads:
