    Description

A VERY INTERESTING AND LARGE COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS AND PAPER MATERIAL FROM A SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY FARM FAMILY: THE LANGLEY FAMILY, PITTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, SALEM COUNTY. MATERIAL DATES FROM 1781 TO THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. CONDITION OF ITEMS VARY; SOME SEAM SPLITS, TEARS, SOILING, ETC. SEVERAL OF THESE  PIECES WOULD BE GREAT FOR FRAMING.
OVER 100 DIFFERENT ITEMS: DEEDS, INDENTURES, LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION, PROMISSORY NOTES, MORTGAGES, ESTATE LIQUIDATION BROADSIDES, SEE PHOTOS - "VENDUE". HAND DRAWN PROPERTY MAP, MISCELLANEOUS FAMILY PAPERS, EARLY PAPER BANK CURRENCY, 19TH CENTURY STORE RECEIPTS, ETC.
INCLUDES A (70) PAGE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS AND FAMILY RELATED FARM LEDGER BELONGING TO REUBEN LANGLEY WITH THE EARLIEST DATE OF 1825. REUBEN LANGLEY DIED IN 1889.
IT APPEARS THAT NEARLY ALL, IF NOT ALL, OF THE ABOVE PROPERTY RELATED DOCUMENTS PERTAIN IN SOME WAY TO THE LANGLEY FAMILY WHO WERE LIVING IN PORCHTOWN, PITTSGROVE TWP., OR TO NEIGHBORING FAMILIES WHOSE PROPERTY BORDERED ON THE LANGLEY LAND AND WERE MENTIONED IN THE VARIOUS LAND CONVEYANCES INCLUDED HERE. A FASCINATING HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE LANGLEY FAMILY AND ADJACENT PROPERTIES MENTIONED.. THE EARLIEST DOCUMENT APPEARS TO BE A LARGE INDENTURE DATED 1781(PICTURED IN PHOTO #11) CONCERNING A NEIGHBORING PIECE OF LAND - OR POSSIBLY THE EARLIEST INDICATION OF WHAT WAS TO BECOME LANGLEY LAND. THIS INDENTURE IS BETWEEN ONE CAPT. JOSEPH HOWARD (PROBABLY SERVING IN THE MILITIA DURING THIS REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD),AND WILLIAM RICHMOND AND WILLIAM RAY. THIS INDENTURE IS COMPLETE BUT SPLIT ACROSS THE CENTER.
ALSO INCLUDED IS AN INTERESTING LETTER DATED SEPT. 29, 1864 FROM JAMES P. LANGLEY, SERVING AS A PRIVATE IN THE 6TH NEW JERSEY INFANTRY, CO. "D", DURING THE CIVIL WAR DESCRIBING HIS SITUATION AS HE LISTENED TO THE DISTANT CANNONS DURING THE BATTLE OF PETERSBURG IN VIRGINIA. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS LETTER WAS LATER COPIED BY A FAMILY MEMBER BECAUSE THE LAST LINE OF IT STATES WHEN THE LETTER WAS RECEIVED. LATER WRITING AND FARM LEDGER INFORMATION IS FOUND ON THE BOTTOM AND ON THE REVERSE  TRANSCRIPTION OF THE LETTER IS SHOWN.
REUBEN LANGLEY WAS THE FATHER OF JAMES P. LANGLEY. UPON HIS DEATH IN 1889 JAMES BECAME THE EXECUTOR OF THE ESTATE AS INDICATED ON THE TWO ESTATE AUCTION BROADSIDES PICTURED. CONDITION OF BOTH BROADSIDES AS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS. THEY WERE FOUND FOLDED AND WILL BE SHIPPED THAT WAY.
WITH ACCURACY BEING UNKNOWN, THE FOLLOWING INCOMPLETE INFORMATION WAS FOUND ON GENEALOGY WEBSITES REGARDING THE LANGLEY FAMILY:
