Empire style clerk. Silver. Madrid, Real Martinez Silver Factory, 1846.
With contrast marks.
Notary made in silver in its color composed of a slightly raised tray on claw-shaped legs, and two containers in the shape of a Doric column shaft and lids topped by garlands or laurel wreaths flanking a square pedestal decorated with classicist-inspired reliefs and topped by a child figure holding a shield.
The contrast marks are found on the bases of the three elements and on the tray. The Real Fábrica de Platería de Martínez was founded in 1778, and marked the introduction in Spain of the industrial manufacturing method in the field of silver work and neoclassical aesthetics in Spanish silverware. Likewise, it was one of the most important silversmith centers in the history of Spain, and was characterized by the originality of its designs and the perfect finish of its pieces. Compare the work with one of the notaries (dated 1841) preserved in the Museum of History of Madrid, or with the one that appears in the “Portrait of a gentleman (Urbano Aspa” by Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans (Madrid, 1843-1917) dated from the Prado Museum around 1870.
