Very rare 80+ year-old hand-painted production concept
background from Disney's Snow White (1937). This is from the scene in which the Dwarfs stumble upon Snow White for the first time, while she is asleep in their bed. Moonlight is entering the bedroom window, illuminating the names "Doc" and "Grumpy" on two of the beds. This background is actually much brighter and nicer than the dark background seen in the film.
The Dwarfs' bedroom is one of the most iconic images from Disney's first and perhaps most famous movie. Original Production backgrounds from the film are nearly impossible to obtain. When they do become available they usually have serious condition issues because they were damaged by the nitrate cel overlays. Because this background was not stored with a cel overlay, it was spared such damage.
This piece was sold as part of lot 163 in the Christies East Vintage Animation Art auction on November 19, 1989. It was sold in a lot with 4 other Snow White backgrounds...but this was by far the nicest.
