The Missouri State Militia was a federally funded state militia organization of Missouri conceived in 1861 and beginning service in 1862 during the American Civil War. It was a full-time force whose primary purpose was to conduct offensive operations against Confederate guerrillas and recruiters as well as oppose raids by regular Confederate forces. The MSM at one time numbered more than 13,000 soldiers, but this force was reduced to 10,000 soldiers, by the United States government. 45th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia was enrolled between 6 July 1862 and 9 August 1862. They were ordered into service between 6 August 1862 and 30 September 1862. The Regiment was discharged between 7 September 1862 and 27 November 1862. They were ordered into service again between 16 March 1863 and 29 September 1864. The Regiment was discharged again 7 August 1863 and 20 November 1864. The Colonel in charge was William A. Shelton.
